This psychedelic rock classic steadily rises in one big crescendo from start to finish.
Melodically and harmonically rich, it’s one of the best examples of the use of the Phrygian Dominant mode in Western popular music. It twists and turns through the sections hinting at the Mixolydian mode via the vocal. Rhythmically, the straight 8th note feel and use of triplet flurries adds that sense of urgency and danger.
Once you’ve got you’re head around the rhythm, and some strange phrasing in the opening guitar part, it should be plain sailing, but studying the inner working of the song can inspire a lot of ideas for unique sounds.
