Rock Steady Guitar

Shift down through the gears, slow your skank, ditch the horns, and double that bass line.

The Rock Steady genre emerged as Jamaica’s optimism following independence faded, reflecting growing discontent with social issues. Ska’s fast tempo no longer suited the mood and by 1966, this led to the rise of rocksteady with its slower beat, stronger bass line, lack of horns, and intricate vocal harmonies.

Despite its brief two-year run, rocksteady had a lasting impact. Guitar legend Lynn Taitt was a key figure in this era, playing on over 1,500 recordings before leaving Jamaica in 1968, effectively marking the end of rocksteady.

In this course, we’ll focus on Lynn Taitt’s playing style on some of the key Rocksteady recordings, including percussive palm-muted sixteenth-note single line melodies on the bass strings, and sliding triads on the top string set.
