Learning the modes of the major scale in one-octave cells will allow you to express them concisely in a short space of time, and also to much more easily identify and target the key intervals within each mode which give them their distinctive sound.

When we’re first introduced to modes, we’re often thrown straight into the deep end with full fretboard, 3-note-per-string mode maps from hell that can be a bit daunting. Get the single octaves under your fingers first and then you’ll be ready to start seeing the shapes within the shapes that will unlock the entire freatboard.
