Modes | 3-Notes-Per-String

This course is designed to give you a different approach to using the quick snapshot context of one-octave cells. We’re going to stretch modes out horizontally and vertically across the entire neck facilitating extended modal improvisation.

By adopting the 3-Note-Per-String (3NPS) system, we are going to connect those isolated clusters into seven bigger, interlocking shapes. In the key of F Major, we’re going to lay out all 7 modes, meaning we’ll be covering every inch of the fretboard from the 1st fret all the way to the 17th.

Key Outcomes

  • Vertical Depth: Moving beyond single-octave limits running modes across 6 strings.
  • Horizontal Reach: 3NPS naturally pushes your hand across a wider range of frets, forcing you to navigate the “blind spots” between your previous cell positions.
  • Mechanical Uniformity: By standardising the number of notes on every string, we create a rhythmic conveyor belt for your picking hand.
