‘Can’t Stand Losing You’ | The Police

Familiarise your digits with The Police’s 1978 reggae fusion hit “Can’t Stand Losing You” from their debut album Outlandos d’Amour.

This course is designed for intermediate guitarists to capture the energy and depth of Andy Summers’ subtle but very effective playing.

The Police’s innovative guitarist blends rock style aggression with reggae’s laid-back groove, and jazzy sophistication in his chord voicings. In this track, as with many, he creates an atmospheric arrangement that prioritises space and dynamics over shredding.

Key techniques you’ll explore include:

  • Reggae-Style Strumming: Crisp, off-beat staccato triad stabs with a clean tone to create that signature skank rhythm.
  • Artificial Harmonics: Atmospheric effects help to create a ethereal interlude.

Once we’re done, you’ll be armed with some solid strategies for creating section-based approaches, using a range of chord voicings and dynamics, and advanced harmonic techniques
